Sarajevo was from 8. to 19. February of 1984 a host XIV Winter Plympic Games.

This  Celebration of youth and sport entered the history of Olympic movement not only by many sport records yet different records before the very start of the Games, kept on this part of Europe territory. A year before Opening Ceremony of the XIV Winter Olympic Games all 167 major projects and 400 sub – facility project were finished. For the first time in the history of Winter Olymoic Games forty nine National Olympic Committees register to take part an a event. More then 2500 athletes and their escort came to Sarajevo – another record up to that time. Before the start of Games 7.283 media representatives from all over the world came to follow the Games in Sarajevo.

That was the record for itself. Accordin to the daily reports of that time, more than 2 bilion people was watching broadcast of the XIV Winter Olymic Games in Sarajevo. Organization team for the Games included more then 30.000 people who where  very carefully observing everything during the Games. At that time Sarajevo hosted more then 12.500 official guests and about as double as much winter sport lovers from all around the world. All of them experienced the great victory of olympisim, peace ideals, and happiness for every single human being in Sarajevo.

When Olympic officials who witnessed your Games give all compliments to host that might be courtesy. But when tens, hundreds and thousands of so called simple citizens that were in Sarajevo during the Games, either personally or through the TV screen, decided to send to some unknown address, letter or telegram with the same words of delight then it means a whole deal more. These messages sent right from the heart, came from St. Petersburg, Detroit, Lyon, Padova, Sofia, London or mexico, Prague or Algeria, New Delhi, Saporoa or Callgary and so on...

Sarajevo was during the February of 1984. city of friendship without the frontiers, city of peace and city of international recognition without pre justice. the second important fact about Sarajevo Olympic Games was that for the first time since Schamonie 1924. one small county became the host of Winter Olympic Games. Up to that time this was a privilege reserved for the richest countries of the world.

Sarajevo Olympic therefore, became the starting point in developing the winter tourism in the region. Process of „mentality change“ was forced by good presentation of natural wealth of this territory. Back in 1968 OED (Organization for economic cooperation and developing) made a special project on tourism possibilities in Sarajevo region by pointing out that this location is one of the most attractive for wintwr – sport tourism.

This project, together with the exellent organization  of XIV Winter Olympic Games pushed forward the idea of turning Sarajevo into the one of the most promising economic projections. Sarajevo, organizing XIV Winter Olymipc Games was to far away from the thought that Olympic February of 1984 should be the start and the end of Olympics – as a movement.

Whatsmore, by announcing the nomination on the 18. May of 1978 in Athens, Sarajevo desired to become symbol of olympisizim – the spirit of friendship, peace, equality and understanding. As the market and cultural center of the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina and area that has more then 28% of the territory above thousand meters above the sea, and 2,7% above the 1500 – Sarajevo started very ambitious program for tourism and open market.

By doing this, city turn into the action it`s own plan „for developing the winter tourism“, which meant that wider area of Sarajevo, including some parts of Goražde, Mostar and Zenica region, thanks to natural resource could establish the final capacity of 60.000 skiers on hour. Compliments that capitol of Bosnia and Herzegovina received for organization of Sarajevo Winter Games guaranteed succes of this plan. Symbiosis of rich past, dynamic post – Olympic present and challenging future was the esence of Olympic City – Sarajevo.
